Make Turmeric a Part of Your Daily Diet

Turmeric has long been an essential ingredient in Indian and south Asian cuisine. The spice has an inimitable flavor that provides curries and related dishes with their distinctive color and flavor.

As discussed throughout this blog, the health benefits of turmeric are numerous and originate primarily from the ability the plant’s curcuminoid complex to reduce inflammation and act as a powerful antioxidant.

Turmeric powder has become a common ingredient in a variety of Western dishes and is commonly taken as a daily supplement in capsule or liquid form. However, turmeric’s benefits may also be enjoyed by using raw chopped rhizomes in cooked dishes just as one might use freshly chopped ginger.  Regardless of how one chooses to utilize this amazing plant, you will benefit from an impressive range of health benefits in addition to the flavor and color enhancement of your food.

Traditional Cooking

The vivid yellow hue of turmeric imparts a robust character of flavor and color to an enormous range of culinary delights from all around the world, but primarily from dishes originating in south Asia.  Indian dishes, especially, rely on turmeric’s panoply of earthy flavors as a foundational spice providing that distinctive Indian flare.

If you are the adventurous sort, try creating your own blend of spicy turmeric supplement in bulk rather than purchasing a prepared product. By producing your own blends you may enjoy higher curcumin concentrations and, quite possibly, higher absorption by making use of pure turmeric powder, black pepper and even going so far as producing pastes combined with olive or coconut oil.

Try mixing turmeric powder in variations according to taste with the following dried and ground ingredients: ginger, black pepper, coriander, cumin and chili powder. You may further enhance this blend by adding it to fresh garlic, cubed tomatoes, coconut milk and onions.  It goes great with chicken, tofu or any variety of vegetables.

Add it to stews, soups and sautéed fare

Soups stocked with vegetables will benefit greatly from the complex flavors of this spice, especially green veggies, tomatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage and cauliflower. Turmeric is well known to impart a wonderfully earthy undertone to almost any stew or soup. Add a bit of turmeric to leafy vegetables like cooked chard, spinach, cabbage, collard greens and kale along with garlic and black pepper for a burst of flavor enhancement.

Turmeric also mixes well with eggs—you can sprinkle it on any type of egg preparation  or infuse it into hollandaise sauce. Tofu, which is known to be somewhat bland, gets a much-needed kick by way of turmeric, especially when combined with cilantro or red onion.

Add it to drinks

Like ginger, turmeric is known as a rootstalk. Even though both are technically rhizomes, they are commonly called roots and commonly included in recipes for smoothies, teas and juices. Make teas by boiling the powder form in fresh water and adding whole milk and honey to taste.

You can also make a simple detoxifying tea by mixing turmeric with lemon. Just put the juice of half a lemon in a glass, add a teaspoon of turmeric and hot water, stir the mix and partake. Add honey to taste if you need a bit of sweetner.

Mix it in everyday dishes

Supplement your roasted vegetables with turmeric powder for loads of flavor and health benefits. Grilled cheese sandwiches gain an extra pop from a dash of turmeric—just sprinkle a bit onto an open-faced cheese sandwich prior to broiling. White rice will become and entirely different and flavorful dish if mixed with and combination of turmeric powder, raisins, diced almonds, chopped red onions or peas.

Get the most out of your turmeric experience

There are many supplements available on the market which claim to contain only the highest grade ingredients. However, take the time to inspect these products because if you do a bit of pre-purchase sleuthing you will discover that not all supplements are created equally.
